Are you up to speed on the recent accessibility code changes that are taking place? Confused by the specifics and how it will affect you and your consultants? Join AWA+D and CannonDesign Vice President and Specifications Leader Jay Whisenant, for a review of the changes to California’s 2017 codes. Jay will give an overview of adjustments to ADA and Title 24 requirements and discuss how they affect not just architects, but engineers, interior designers and landscape architects as well. Discussion will also include far reaching changes in ANSI A117.1, the accessibility baseline standard used in the model code.

Description
The California Building Code has been at the forefront of developing responsive accessibility regulations; to this end, the 2016 CBC adds new language and refines existing regulations. In addition, accessibility criteria continue to evolve in other regulatory schemes, including ICC A117.1 and the 2010 ADA Standards. Our role and responsibility as designers is to be cognizant of these developments.
This discussion will review updates in the 2016 CBC accessibility regulations, as well as the relationship with ADA Standards. and recently passed 2015 ANSI A117.1 changes. It will also review key and consistent compliance issues routinely creating risk and liability, such as reach ranges and surface treatments.

About the Presenter
Jay Whisenant, AIA, CCS, has over 40 years of experience in the architectural profession, with extensive experience in technical standards and systems for a wide range of institutional, commercial, and mixed-use projects. As Vice President with Cannon Design, he is responsible for specifications for the Western Region. He also serves as an office Quality Leader, and provides staff development courses, technical document QC reviews, and content development for Cannon Design Standards.
Jay has taught code and architectural practice related courses at various universities, represented AIA in the Model Code development process, has published articles on accessibility, and currently serves as the Architect member on the California Building Standards Commission Technical Advisory Committee responsible for developing accessibility regulations for California Building Code, having previously chaired the committee for 8 years.
