March is Women’s History Month, and we’d like to invite you to celebrate with us at our upcoming event reflecting on Julia Morgan’s architectural legacy. We’ll be partnering with the City of Santa Monica’s Cultural Affairs Department and the Santa Monica Conservancy on March 5th at the Annenberg Community Beach House (originally the Marion Davies Estate), designed by Morgan, with the intention of remembering Morgan’s influence, looking back on challenges women in architecture and design have faced, and looking forward to future challenges. This will be a day of tours and conversation on the past and future of women designers in Southern California. We will celebrate Morgan’s accomplishments and draw on her documented challenges as a pioneering female in the field of architecture as examples of the struggles women in architecture have historically overcome. Conversations will focus on the changes that have been made for women in fields of design and architecture, as well as which challenges remain in place today. We’ll be hosting discussions featuring panelists across several allied architecture and design fields including Gere Kavanaugh, artist and interior designer; Pooja Bhagat, City of Santa Monica City Architect; Stephanie Reich, City of Santa Monica Urban Planner; and Claudia Carol, Senior Associate, Planning & Urban Design Practice Area Leader, Gensler. We hope you’ll join us to help commemorate Women’s History Month and kick off our year of celebrations for AWA+D’s 95th Anniversary!
