2016 AWAF FELLOWSHIP WINNERS: JANICA LEY BAKER and KATHERINE HARVEY
In May 2016, the AWAF awarded the first Professional Development Fellowship to Katherine Harvey and Janica Ley Baker and used the 2016/17 year to explore the potential of LAUSD play yards to address the effects of climate and urbanization, and introduce the potential for more diversified learning environments and enhancing public health through recreational green space.
Kate and Janica were part of a master planning effort in 2011-2012 for 27 campuses in the LAUSD school district. They selected a sub-watershed of the Tujunga Wash as an area of focus, and propose to use this initial exploration as a thesis to expand into a regional study of the district’s over 710 square mile coverage to research interventions that address long term effects of urbanization, including impermeability, heat island effects and loss of native species diversity, and seek out an alternate future, aggregated from the micro-scale of the singular public school campus.
The proposed solutions are at once strategic, measured, playful, and optimistic about our region and the role of public lands in its future. Kate and Janica plan to exhibit at LACI and hold an exhibit and panel discussion at the Helms Bakery.

2017 AWAF FELLOWSHIP WINNER: AUDREY SATO
Audrey Sato is a principal architect at SATO Architects and a lecturer in the architecture department at Cal Poly Pomona.Originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, she relocated to the mainland to attend Brown University and went on to receive her Masters of Architecture degree from Cal Poly Pomona.Audrey specializes in residential architecture, with experience in both green building design and historic properties.
Audrey’s Fellowship proposal is to create a podcast dedicated to interviewing inspirational local women in architecture, providing insight into both the everyday and extraordinary challenges and successes they encounter.

2017 AWAF FELLOWSHIP WINNER: HANNAH OITZMAN
Hannah is a second year architecture major at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. She is involved in Habitat for Humanity, AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) and is in the beginning stages of starting a chapter of ACA (Association of Christians in Architecture) on her campus. During the summer, she works as an RA for the Cal Poly Architecture Career Workshop for high school students.

2017 AWAF FELLOWSHIP WINNER: SILVIYA ZHIVKOVA
Originally from Bulgaria, Silviya has spent most of her education journey abroad. She graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Interior Design in Milan, Italy. She is also currently doing a master of Interior Architecture at Woodbury University, Burbank. When it comes to Silviya and design, she can look, dream and see infinite possibilities. Design does not have boundaries, it is so powerful that it can change lives and this is what makes her admire it so much.

Margaux is commencing her second year at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA where she studies Environmental Design. Her interests are creating spaces that heal people and addressing socio-political issues. She volunteers with the YWCA after school program for young girls.
