Biography
Being born and raised in Iceland, I derive inspiration from the unassuming, almost austere beauty and natural features of my native country, the land of fire and ice.
Since 1999, I have been the co-principal along with Tryggvi Thorsteinsson of the design studio, as well as being the inventor and CEO of mnmMOD building solutions since 2007.
Minarc’s focus is in creative minimalism. Our studio has gained considerable recognition for the holistic and environmental approach that drives our choices of materials, such as the absence of paint, tiles and carpet, or the energy-conscious use of natural cross-ventilation in place of artificially forced air systems. The innovative use of reclaimed wood, recycled glass and rubber tires, cement panels and sustainable materials is another hallmark of designs. Complementing these eco-conscious decisions is the use of warm, natural materials such as walnut, birch and ipe, a durable South American wood that can last up to half a century. I am dedicated to working in sustainability and bringing innovative ideas forward in clear connection to sustainability. I also have created building solutions to further help shape my company and help move eco-conscious design forward.
What do you feel are some of your most important achievements?
I highly value and strive for balance between work and life.
What excites you creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Innovative use of recycled, re-used and sustainable materials are very exciting and important to me.
What do you think/hope your occupation will look like in 10 years?
I hope it will be more beneficial to the community and the environment. Additionally, I hope that people especially within the occupation will be more educated and aware of sustainability and the importance of environmentally friendly materials and designs.
